From the Lions Den September, 2018
Who has noticed the change in the flags at Miners Bay? Well, the Lions flag at Miners’ Bay Park has been replaced by the Terry Fox Foundation flag. The Lions are pleased to help support this very worthy cause in any way we can, and building participation for the September 16th run is our goal. It is hard to believe it has been 38 years since Terry began his memorable run. One of our Lions, Bryan Westby, has been maintaining the putting green at Dinner Bay for many years. He has recently moved to Victoria, so Lion Rob Noyes has accepted the challenge! We have been busy during August with our rentals. Thanks, members, for setting up tents and chairs and tables for the Fall Fair and weddings, and thanks also goes to the BBQ team that has been providing burgers and hotdogs for the ball games and the Fall Fair. Also, the Bingo was an added attraction at the fair. The Mayne Island Lions Salmon/Chicken BBQ is Sunday, September 2nd on the Labour Day weekend. The band, Rufusrockhead, is our featured music for the afternoon. You can look forward to a fine meal, the 222 draws, bingo, and the beer tent. Other Mayne Island volunteer groups will have table displays this year. Hotdogs and drinks will also be sold at a separate tent. Our plan is to serve 400 hungry people from noon until 4 pm. During the afternoon at 2 pm, the unveiling of the Japanese history plaques will take place. Special guests have been invited and we hope many of them will be able to attend. Once again, the Recycling Society will be responsible for recycling and garbage there will be one central location for the bins. At the international level, Lions groups are supporting new global causes to define our second century of service and to meet emerging needs. Lions are serving vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer and our new global service focus, diabetes. Our goal is to serve 200 million people per year by 2021. Also, we are seeking balanced membership of caring men and women and would like everyone to know we do invite Mayne Island women to join the present Lions women in our club to help us achieve that goal. See you at Dinner Bay, September 2nd! David Chase; http://www.mayneislandlions.org |
