From the Lions Den March, 2018
The writer is still digesting the delicious delights of the February 16 Crockpot Cookoff, an ambitious project to raise funds for the local school’s technology needs. In the gym, eyes closed and mouth corners turned up as the islanders sampled the portioned provisions the 12 stations. Coins clinked and bills swished as dinner guests placed their votes in the jars. The PAC members, led by Tara Walker and Janelle Lawson, along with the school staff, students and their parents worked very hard to provide a smorgasbord of sumptuous food, music, spirited competitors, students’ décor and artwork, a silent auction and multiple helpings of enthusiasm. The Mayne Island Lions were very pleased to sponsor the event, provide tables, supplies, 50/50 draw, and beverage service. The community’s great support was revealed in ticket sales, cash voting, many generous examples of donations and celebratory spirit! Special mention goes to the Mayne Island Brewing Company, and to the Hoyne brewery. A very special thank you goes to Gulf Islands Insurance, Anthony Jamieson Design, and to the Mayne Inn for their very generous donations to the cause! And finally, to the teams who made it all possible, for their culinary talents, exceptional spiritedness, and occasional sass…deep gratitude from all those others supporting this very worthwhile cause. Working with community groups is a very positive way for the Lions to serve the island. The Lions are teaming up with other service groups from Mayne Island to host an Open House. If you are new to the Island or simply wondering how you can help sustain our Island lifestyle, this is an opportunity to come and meet the service groups that make Mayne Island tick. The “OPEN HOUSE” will take place on April 7th, 2018 at the Ag Hall from 10am to 3pm, so please join us, come and meet fellow islanders and see if there is a group that would be of interest to you. Volunteering is a great way to build your community and make the very most of Island living. Next month we will report on further events that the club will be promoting, and in the meantime, be aware that our scholarship information will be published soon, the local telephone book will be printed and distributed next month.
