From the Lions Den October, 2019
The Mayne Island community and visitors, including 42 Syrian guests, turned out to make our traditional Labour Day Lions Salmon and Chicken BBQ a great success. Over 400 dinners were served by our busy team in the kitchen. We extend our thanks to the BBQ and kitchen crew, and all the other volunteers including those who set up and took down all the tents, tables and chairs, the musicians, the bingo team, the bar crew, ticket sellers and the 222 organizers. We recognize that quite a few of the volunteers at the BBQ are not members but “friends of Lions” that are always there to help when called upon. A special thank you to Joan and Jerry Betker for their long service to this event. The Lion in the tiara calling the last few bingo games at the BBQ was Lion Nicole Rittemann, who is "Miss Petite Greater Vancouver" and placed runner up as "Miss Canada Petite" at the 'Miss Canada Globe Pageant'. Congratulations Nicole! Congratulations also go to the Terry Fox Run organizers and volunteers for once again putting on a fun afternoon and raising over $10,000 from Mayne Islanders for this worthy event. The Lions continue to enjoy helping at this event with some of us huffing and puffing up and down those hills. Note November 16th on your calendar for the Lions Charter Night. As always, it is a fun evening of fine dining, music and dancing, a raffle and live auction and the presentation of the 2019 Mayne Islander of the Year award. Last year’s recipient of this award was May McKenzie. The public is invited to nominate a candidate and the ad outlining the criteria for the Mayne Islander of the Year Award is in this month’s MayneLiner. Tickets for this event are available at Home Hardware and Lion Brian Dearden reminds us that they go pretty quickly so do not be disappointed. Buy your ticket early! Planning by the Lions for the 2020 Mayne Island phone book is underway and if you are new to the Island and need your information added or need to make changes to your current phone book entry, you may go online at www.mayneislandlions.org to do so. Also, there is a form inside the 2019 directory for making changes. Fred Mussett; http://www.mayneislandlions.org |
