From the Lions Den November, 2019
The Lions Charter Night Dinner and Dance will be held on November 16 at the Mayne Island school gymnasium. It is the 48th year since our Charter and will be a night to celebrate this anniversary and thank our many Island friends for their support throughout the year. One of the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the 2019 Mayne Islander of the Year award. Back by popular demand at this Charter Night, after their great performance at the Lions Salmon BBQ, is Rufus Rockhead to get everyone dancing after dinner. The traditional roast beef dinner with a salmon dish and a vegetarian option will also include wine. After rave reviews from last year, it will be catered by Lion Brian Dearden. The evening will also include door prizes and a 50/50 draw. The $30 Charter Night tickets are available at Home Hardware. These tickets sell quickly so do not be disappointed by waiting too long. We welcomed the District Governor Cec Specht, District Administer Cathy Specht and Zone Chairman Lorne Bunyon at our October General Meeting. The District Governor outlined his pet projects for the year including Lions Quest, a program taking place with Big Brothers and Big Sisters that will help children cope with bullying and provide other valuable life skills. He also discussed the Canada 100 celebration, the 100th anniversary of the first Canadian Lions club in Windsor. This celebration lasts from July 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2021 and one of the celebratory goals of the International President is to see 100,000 trees planted across the country. The Lions met some future members in late October at the Mayne Island Early Childhood Society’s (MIECS) Halloween Family Party. The children were all dressed up as Lions with some sporting a moustache! NOW we know that we are ALWAYS looking for more eager Mayne Islanders to step forward and join our ranks but perhaps we need to change the rules slightly for this new bunch of volunteers. It was quite a group. Scroll down to check them out. We need sponsors for this lot! Perhaps their adults will step up to this need. Future events to note on your calendar include the Seniors’ Dinner on December 11, and the Santa Ship on the afternoon of December 15th (2:15 at Miners Bay) followed by Bingo in the evening.
