From the Lions Den March, 2020
So, have you been in the old schoolhouse since the renovation? What a great venue for a meeting such as our 2020 Lions Executive retreat on February 10!
For the past 3 years, we have held a retreat here on Mayne, with the purpose of reviewing the operating procedures and programs that we currently support. It is a time, too, when we review our budget and start the process of establishing the one for the next fiscal year. One of the programs that we looked at is the Phone Book, which is a major revenue producer and allows us to support many of the groups and programs on Mayne Island . The cover art for 2020 was reviewed and the advertising revenue and support recapped. An expanded team is being assembled as we make this an even more important focus for 2021. Other plans reviewed were;
The executive is fully aware of the contribution that The Lions makes to the Mayne Island community and is fully committed to staying vital and in tune with the changes that our Island is experiencing. Our annual Scholarship Fund application process is beginning for high school graduates residing on Mayne Island. Have a look at the ad in the March MayneLiner issue. Another ad in this issue invites the public to an information and screening for diabetes on March 11, 1:30 to 3:00 pm. This is one of the areas Lions are asked to focus on during our 100th anniversary year. Interested islanders will be asked to fill in a questionnaire, the result of which will give them an idea as to their likelihood for diabetes, and will then, if necessary, be encouraged to seek medical advice. Energized by the plight of Australians and the huge losses caused by the fires there, the Lions teemed up with the Firefighters here and sold Burgers on Seedy Saturday to provide aid. The International Lions will donate 100% of the proceeds to the cause. A huge thanks goes to Tru Value for their great community spirit, providing all the food for the event. An Hors D’oeuvres “Cook-off” on Saturday, March 28th will be held in the school gym. The committee for this event includes Lions Alan, Bob and Brian, together with Helen O’Brian and Deb Foote.. All the profit will go to M. I. E. C. S. to help towards its plan to build a family centre / day-care behind the tennis courts. We have encouraged our snowbird members to return north with the robins as our activities rev up for the spring and summer seasons! Sure is gratifying to see more daylight and less rain!
