From the Lions Den March, 2019
Lion’s Den Article, March 2019 So, what are the Lions up to at this time of year? Lion John Glover is giving a presentation to our members at our next meeting about scams and how to protect ourselves from being victims of scammers. Rumour has it that there may also be a public seminar on this topic! All of our programs and services are decided by agreement at our meetings, of course. However individual leadership and committee support from members is where the action gets off the ground! While the “busy bee” part of our community involvement lies ahead for 2019, we are buzzing away as we prepare to nominate new officers and leadership commitments from our members. Our nominating committee is actively lining up our new executive slate to be elected at our March meeting to serve from July 1 through June 2020. The positions are president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, treasurer, secretary, membership chairperson, Tail Twister (a light-hearted donation “encourager”), the Lion Tamer (meeting and dinner attendance organizer) and 4 Directors. The Directors may take on different tasks, but traditionally they have included rentals, equipment inventory, storage, maintenance, delivery, set-up/takedowns, telephone book production, web page design and maintenance, and budget. Before the end of June, the many tasks required for our services require our members to step up to take on leaderships roles for The Guide Dog Program, as one example. Other events that require leaders and willing hands include, Lions "Mayne Islander of the Year", Steak Night, the Car Rally, School Bursaries and Scholarships, the Annual Salmon BBQ (with many sub-committees and volunteer roles), Bingo, Charter Night, the Santa Ship, the Seniors Dinner and Evening out, the Bike rodeo, the 222 Draw and Eyeglasses collections. Pardon us if we missed an event from this list. It is quite a list! Liaisons Other effective ways (providing labour or equipment or food services) for us to serve the community is to assist or partner with Dinner Bay Park maintenance, Japanese Gardens, Christmas lights in the Gardens, Canada Day activities, Terry Fox Run, Tour des Iles, Baseball, Fall Fair, Church Fair and other events. With the positive leadership we have had over the years, traditional activities and roles have endured and flourished while re-evaluations and bright ideas have brought about changes, as well. I know for sure that the lists above have omitted some of our tasks. Also, I believe we haven’t accessed some of the talents and skills of all of our older and newer members who could bring to those “bright ideas” to add to the services we can provide on Mayne Island. How the local Lions connect with the International Lions, is for another article! THE “BIG” TAKEAWAY FOR OUR FELLOW LIONS: It takes many hands to accomplish all of the tasks that Lion Dave Chase has identified above. EACH LION in our club has a role to play and at least ONE EVENT to volunteer for. Let’s remember that in order to continue our motto “WE SERVE” each of us is required to roll up our sleeves and take action. GO – LIONS - GO! David Chase; http://www.mayneislandlions.org |
