From the Lions Den June, 2019
Lion’s Den Article, June, 2019 With Spring upon us, the Lions are busy setting up for special events and accepting requests for summer. The Lions shed annex is now weatherproofed, and the shed is all cleaned up and ready for rentals. We advise anyone who is requiring equipment to check our web page and decide well ahead of time to avoid being out of luck. One porta-potty is already gone for six months!
Check the RENTALS section if you need to take advantage of what we offer for rent. A thank you was given to Lion John Glover at our May General Meeting for his Practicing Safe “Hex” talk on cyber security. A full report on this talk is on the Lions web page at the site given below. Lion Nigel Barrett was also thanked for completing the ramp for the transition shelter. Finally, Lion President Allen Slade thanked the Lions for stepping in during his motorcycle trip in Africa. Lion Tara Walker reported that she, Janelle Lawson and Christy Meers are reviewing the possibilities of a Scouting Canada program. The age groups would be 5 to 7, 8 to 10, 11 to 14, and are co-ed. The Fire Department would sponsor the scouts and the old School house would be used for meetings. The program would run Sept - May and be called the 2nd Mayne Island Troop. Lion Brian Dearden is continuing his three-month weight loss challenge and, as of mid May, has raised $800 for the Food Bank. He has one pound to go! You can still bet against his effort to lose that last pound. Hopefully, Brian didn’t just have salad at the Lions Appreciation (formerly Steak Night) dinner. Seven new Lions will be inducted at the June 5th General Meeting. Our Membership committee has been busy putting into practice ideas from the April Membership forum in Parksville. Also, the new Lions executive are invited to the next executive meeting on June 3rd. The Lions had a table at the opening day of the Farmers market, primarily to accept donations for the 2019 Phone Book. We need to make up the difference between increased costs and a reduction in advertising revenue due to fewer Yellow Pages for off Island businesses. Islanders can contribute by using the envelope inside the 2019 Phone Book and placing it in the drop box at Gulfport Realty. Lions groups from other Gulf Islands charge $10 for their phone book, and your donations would prevent the need to go that route. The Lions will be manning the arrivals area at Miners Bay on the June 22nd weekend to welcome visitors for the Tour des Iles event. Lastly, don’t forget to track down a Lion for one of the coveted 222 tickets drawn at the end of the summer at the Lions Salmon Barbecue. There will be frequent prize draws throughout the day and the last draw prize is $800.00 but you do need a ticket to have a chance to win anything!
