From the Lions Den April, 2018
We’re very pleased that the latest edition of the Lions Mayne Island telephone book is out now. A big thank you goes to Toby Snelgrove and crew for their many hours of work on this project. Somehow the credit for the cover artist was not included in the phone book. Please accept our apologies, Terrill Welch. We appreciate her beautiful work for our cover and if you do too, and you would like to see more of her work, Terrill may be contacted through email: tawelch@shaw.ca, telephone or text : 1-250-744-4560.
Her paintings are internationally recognized and are sold to art collectors throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Australia, England, Norway and Switzerland. More of her work may be seen on her web page: https://terrillwelchartist.com. Also, please note that the donation cheques found inside the phone books can be left in the Lions DROP BOX at Gulfport! Thanks to all who contribute as it helps to ensure that this community resource carries on. Non-residents and those who wish to purchase extra copies will find them at convenient outlets in the community for $10. Our thanks go out to the Lions who ran the BINGO at the Ag Hall, March 31st. and to the clean-up crew who were out in force before Easter Sunday’s egg hunt and events, making sure that the deer’s contributions were scooped up before the crowd descended on the field at Dinner Bay. On Saturday, April 7, there will be an event that hasn’t happened for a long time on the island. With so many newcomers to the island in the past year, the Lions are helping organize an OPEN HOUSE at the Ag Hall. Multiple service groups on the island are setting up tables to explain their roles in the community. Old time residents might be surprised at what they can learn as well. This should be a fun event with food and refreshments. So come on out and chat with at least 20 groups of volunteers who help make this island life tick! Doors open at 10 am and close at 3pm. The two Canada 150 plaques featuring the Japanese citizens’ contribution to Mayne Island are now completed and will be mounted at the Adachi Pavilion on a date yet to be determined, as there will be several off-island guests present at the unveiling. At our next meeting, April 4th, we will be electing our officers for the 2018/2019 term. We will save the announcements of a couple of upcoming events for late May and early July for the May column. Please remember to check out our web page for our news, rental information and photo gallery. The Volunteer Fair project is featured on the Lion web site.
