CHARTER NIGHT 2019
What a great picture of our two lions
Dave and Rena Chase -
as they welcome guests for the 2019 Charter Night Dinner and Dance.
AND OUR SPECIAL GUESTS ALMOST READY TO SIGN UP!
The November Lions Charter Night Dinner and Dance started with future Lions, all born in the last 12 months, on parade. One of the toddlers even pushed in his own little barbecue on wheels. Look out Lion Brian Dearden!
As we have not yet slowed down the aging process, Lions are looking for new younger Lions to continue our volunteer service. Based on the recent population boom, we have great expectations for the future. These future Lions first made an appearance complete with burgundy vests and grey wigs in October at the Mayne Island Early Childhood Society’s Halloween Party. Some pictures of that event can be found on the November Lions Den and also below. The Lions are working with this new group as they endeavor to accommodate a new generation of Mayne Islanders. Another highlight of the Charter Night was the presentation of the 2019 Mayne Islander of the Year award to Richard De Armond. We hope those new “long pants” keep you warm over the winter. There will be more about this well-deserved winner in the January issue of the Mayneliner. Also, a special thank you was given to Joan and Jerry Betker for their long service at the Lions Salmon Barbecue. Dancing to music by Rufus Rockhead helped to work off the excellent roast beef and salmon dinner (stuffed pepper for vegetarians) catered by Lion Brian Dearden and his crew. Free wine also got Lions and their guests dancing! There were several door prizes and the lucky winner of the quilt was Jill Hansche, while Roxanne Patterson-Wiggins won the 50/50 draw. Thanks to Roxanne for generously donating some of her winnings to the Days for Girls project. The Lions were also part of the team that put up the lights at the Japanese Gardens at the end of November. There will be a preview of the lights at the Honour a Life celebration on December 13. December events include the Seniors’ Christmas Dinner on December 11, where single seniors and Lions will enjoy a social event at the Ag Hall. On December 14 the Santa Ship arrives in Miners Bay at about 2:15 pm and leaves about 3:30 pm. A team of reindeer will then pull the fire engine with Santa aboard up to the Ag Hall where Santa will hand out gifts to the children. Later that evening, the Christmas Bingo will begin in the Hall with doors opening at 7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start. Lots of door prizes and games including a $100 blackout to be won so get there early. As usual, December will be a busy month for Lions ramping up from the 345 volunteer hours the Lions contributed to the community in October. The Lions wish everyone on Mayne Island and their families and friends a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday. Fred Mussett; http://www.mayneislandlions.org |
