From the Lions Den                                                          February, 2018

The Mayne Island Lions have celebrated 100 years of being part of the world’s largest service organization, presently involving about 1,400,000 members!  The international focus has been on diabetes, the environment, hunger relief, pediatric cancer and vision.

People have more choices today to serve and give back to their community and to people in need.  We need to continue promoting new ways for caring people to be involved in our service and to provide options for service engagement which are flexible and mesh with today’s busy lifestyles.  We will continue to welcome people of all ages, genders, races and faith into our movement and, especially, into our club.

December was as busy a month as January has been quiet.  Our president congratulated our members at the January business meeting for helping out in many ways during the festive season.  At this meeting, Al Mitchel and Peter Hansche were presented with a special 100th anniversary pin for increasing our membership.
We are looking forward to the joint Lions/PAC Crockpot Cook-off event, February 16, to raise funds to help update the technology needs for the students.  This should be a scrumptious, fun-filled evening!

Plans are in the works for a spring open house to show the many recent arrivals to Mayne Island a cross-section of the activities, clubs and groups available to enrich the life here.  The writer remembers a similar event on arriving on the island back in 2007.  What a great way to meet some of the folks involved in the many rich experiences Mayne Island has to offer!

Toby Snelgrove and his helpers will soon be making the 2018 telephone book available to the community.
While our cutlery, dishes, tents, tables and chairs lie dormant before our rental season arrives, we are cleaning the tents and anticipating their fresh appearances topped with the new triangular center pole flags generously donated by Alan Guy.  It is never too early, if you are planning an event this year, to book the rentals by going to our web page to make arrangements.  Lion Henry Till stands ready to take your orders.  Full instructions are on our web site – (RENTALS)

John Glover is energized to spreading the news of the Days For Girls project to other Lions groups in our district.  He is anticipating that communities with Lions Clubs in our district will also have active quilters nearby, and has enlisted the help of Bonnie Simmonds who has been very instrumental in getting this project rolling.  If the lions clubs in Multiple District 19 were able to participate just think of the potential for increasing the number of sanitary kits for schoolgirls and working women in countries with minimal supplies!  Think also about increasing the opportunities for education with fewer absent days and better involvement in their communities.  We hope this idea develops as much enthusiasm with other Lions and quilters as it has here.

An important item required for each kit is a supply of soap, so if you have some extra “motel style” wrapped soaps, please pass them on to a Lions member or to one of the quilters.  Many of us do a lot of traveling and hotel/motel stays are usually part of that.  Another way to demonstrate that "WE SERVE".

Finally, if you have purchased new eyeglasses recently, the old ones can benefit someone else in need.  The recycling centre, Home Hardware, the health clinic and several other locations have Lions drop boxes ready to receive your donation.

The January 2018 LION magazine has some excellent material about Helen Keller and why we lions are so focussed on those who are sight disadvantaged.  If you have not already treated yourself to the LION magazine go here:
http://digital.lionmagazine.org/publication/?m=6639&l=1#{"issue_id":462736,"view":"articleBrowser","article_id":"2966785"} to read more about Helen Keller.

While you are there - enjoy the rest of the magazine and peruse back issues if you like.  Great stories!
