From the Lions Den May, 2017
For your information, part of our fundraising goes to the Lions Club International Foundation. This branch of the Lions has served some of the most vulnerable people and the neediest places on earth. The vision for the foundation for 2018 is to raise $50 million every year to fight measles, provide clean water, build clinics and rebuild disaster-stricken communities.
Locally, the Lions have taken on the challenge of cooking hotdogs and burgers at the Dinner Bay baseball diamond for hungry fans watching Mayne Island and Saturna Island games. These will be every other Wednesday once the season begins. Keep your eyes open for the baseball schedule and join in on the fun! The Tour des Isles event is expected to bring hundreds of visitors to the islands this coming June. The Lions have donated to the cause and will be providing greeters at the docks on the June 23 to 25th weekend. If you would like to be a greeter for our visitors, please contact the writer. As part of our centennial contributions, 3 flagpoles have been ordered for Miners Bay Park. We are also contributing to the completion of the bandstand at the Agricultural grounds by providing funding from the Peter Archer fund for a torch-on roof. By press time, a dozen or so Lions will have attended the Saturna Island Lions Charter Night - always a fund, family event, with a boat trip to a wonderful meal and lots of camaraderie! The Saturna Island Lions, in turn, will be invited to our steak night on May 17. Also, several members will be reporting back on their experiences at the Lions Convention in Sidney, April 21st and 22nd.
